$14 Advance Reservations / $16 Day of EventTalk about an evening steeped in TRADITION! Both of these bands are some of the best in Georgia at playing authentic traditional Old Time and Bluegrass music. It doesn't mean they don't venture out on the edge at other occasions, but tonight's benefit event will be all about as 'good as it gets' traditional music - in the c.1858 home of The Crimson Moon Cafe - on its 10th birthday! Come joins us in the celebration!
Tonight’s event is all about Music, Tradition, and Celebration – via an evening of Bluegrass and Old Time music by The Georgia Crackers AND Bluebilly Grit & Friends. All performers have generously donated their time and talent so that 75% of the ticket sales can go to support two local organizations: The Bear on the Square Mountain Music Festival and Georgia Pick N Bow Traditional Music School. Both not-for-profit organizations contribute greatly to both the preservation and growth of 'traditional' music, where 'new grass' bands like New Grass Revival, Blueground Undergrass, and The Avett Brothers grew their roots from: Bluegrass, Old Time, and Appalachian Folk music played on guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, dulcimer/hammer dulcimer, spoons, and usually an acoustic 'stand up' or wash tub bass. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the these performers and supporters who’ve helped make this exciting ‘10th Birthday’ of The Crimson Moon Café be just the BEGINNING of a month long effort to give back to the many who’ve supported our success over the last 10 years!
MORE ABOUT THE GA. CRACKERS: A newly formed trio of musicians whose sound recalls the the golden age of hillbilly string bands will take the stage tonight at Barking Legs Theater. Known as The Georgia Crackers, the group features old-time singer Kenneth Johnson on guitar, Chip Corbitt on clawhammer banjo, who provide the rhythm section for Mick Kinney on fiddle. Kinney has said his secret to fiddle playing is to “keep it hot and greasy, but take it easy.” The musicians take their cues from pioneers such as Fiddlin’ John Carson, Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers to re-create the vintage sound of the 1920s, while still being open to improvisation. They are known for their stage banter and a spirit of spontaneity that often includes buck dancing by Edmonstone, an original member of the famous Green Grass Cloggers. For a true taste of authentic Old Time music, it just doesn’t get much better!
MORE ABOUT BLUEBILLY GRIT & FRIENDS: BlueBilly Grit has evolved from their traditional bluegrass roots to be a band that takes you to a crossroad where Old Fashioned Bluegrass meets Progressive, Contemporary, and Rockabilly. With a love for all genres of music, BlueBilly Grit performs the music everyone loves along with new and innovative originals driven by a style all their own. Just three short years ago BlueBilly Grit was jamming once a year around an old grist mill at a county park. Now a song the group wrote and recorded about that old grist mill is due to be shipped to 800 radio stations in the US, Europe, and Australia in early Feb. 2011. The song will appear on a compilation cd along with songs from Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, Steve Martin, and The Grascals. Not bad for a group fairly new to the bluegrass Americana scene! With one cd under their belt BBG is in the studio recording their second. This group continues to evolve into what they hope will be a force to be reckoned with. Amidst much uncertainty in the music world these days, BlueBilly Grit seems to be holding their coarse, and will be the first to tell you that a source greater than themselves appears to be calling the shots. BlueBilly Grit takes pride in the fact that they’re not just another “hot lick, blazing solo” bluegrass group. It’s all about the song with this group and rightly so because they have something to say – and they say it very well!

However, there is a clear and ‘golden’ thread of traditional music woven throughout their repertoire. $14 Advance Reservations / $16 Day of ShowJuly 13th 2011 this ‘funky bluegrass’ band of NGCSU students and alumni performed an innovative bluegrass version of ‘Billie Jean’ in front of the cameras for NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Though they were unfortunately voted off that round, a month later they were called back for the ‘wild card’ show by Howie due to a flood of online requests. They didn’t move forward that night, but their popularity took off like a sky rocket carrying founder/mandolin player, Zac McConnell; vocalist Adam Kersh; bassist Trygve Myers; guitarist and harmonica player, Michael Wallace; and Jake Larios on the banjo. There’s no telling where they will land with a little bit of time and focus on honing their extremely unique style of ‘bluegrass backed pop’ music! We’ll definitely have Coffee House seats available (reserved by phone only) for this sure to be sold out ‘home town’ show!
The Fiddleheads are a group of bluegrass-inspired, genre-crossing musicians from Dahlonega, Georgia formed by mandolin player Zak McConnell in the fall of 2009. They first performed in front of a packed audience in Shott Auditorium of North Georgia College & State University in November of that year when they instantly amazed the audience, wowing them with renditions of traditional bluegrass ballads, modern rock, and songs from the pinnacle of 80′s pop music.
Michael Wallace and Jake Larios, with whom Zak had worked on previous occasions for various projects within the University’s music department, were natural choices to fill the band’s guitarist and banjoist slots. Each had long histories with bluegrass music, yet from varying backgrounds. To round out the then-quartet, Trygve Myers, longtime friend of Zak and past musical collaborator, was brought in to play bass – both stand up and electric. The group continued to play gigs, weddings, and other concerts for the next year and a half, enjoying perpetual growth and success, which stepped up considerably when they added popular local vocalist Adam Kersh to their lineup in January of 2011.
This addition also helped the band make a ‘to the moon’ giant leap in popularity when they were invited to America’s Got Talent in July of this year – and judge Howie brought them back for the Wildcard show. Though they didn’t make it to the next round, the experience seriously catalyzed both their popularity and their desire to further define their ‘own’ sound. They are currently working on a CD to showcase this and performing their first established ‘venue’ show since their NBC debut at The Crimson Moon Café, one of the southeast’s’ premier listening venues. Tickets are $14 in advance and $16 day of show, and can be purchased in advance at www.thecrimsonmoon.com, and the day of the event in person or by calling 706.864. 3982. However, with only 100 seats available, this event promises to be sold out show so advance reservations are highly recommended.

John Cowan rose to fame when he became the lead singer for New Grass Revival. He and band mates Sam Bush, Bela Fleck and Pat Flynn introduced a new generation of music fans to an explosive, experimental brand of bluegrass…Newgrass! However, after inspiring and entertaining fans for nearly two decades, New Grass Revival disbanded in 1990. On his own, John was free to give his creative muse full rein. He recorded a series of critically acclaimed albums spanning the musical spectrum, often bending and blending genres.
In the early nineties, John joined the Doobie Brothers and lent both his bass and vocal skills to this iconic band on tour. However, after just two short years, John once again felt restless and returned to a solo career that allowed him more expressive freedom. As the 21st century began, John found himself coming full circle, returning to his roots in Newgrass and forming The John Cowan Band. Though the line-up has changed from time to time, John has always surrounded himself with only the finest acoustic musicians.
The band’s current line-up features John on bass and lead vocals, Jeff Autry on guitar (acknowledged as one of America’s best flat-pickers), John Frazier on mandolin (a true rising star in the acoustic world), Shad “Lightning” Cobb on fiddle (world renowned for his blazing finger work) and Bryon Larrance on percussion (the newest addition to JCB, allowing for an expanded repertoire). John comments, “Our music has evolved organically, its rooted in my Newgrass days but I’m also exploring and breaking new ground as well…these guys are very talented and I love playing with ‘em…of course the true measure is the fantastic response we’ve gotten from audiences on tour, we love performing, it's food for the soul.”
A pioneer of what has become known as “newgrass” and “jamband” music, Cowan first performed at the famed festival with his legendary band New Grass Revival. His new album, 8,745 ft., clearly illustrates why Cowan is a perennial Telluride favorite. Recorded live, featuring Cowan and an assortment of the great players who have appeared with him there over the years, 8,745 ft. showcases Cowan’s amazing command of a range of styles and his effortless blending of rock and bluegrass, jazz and folk, blues and reggae, recapturing the magic of that ground-breaking experimentation he first started and taking it to the next level.
